16,284 apps with “AI” in the name were released on Google Play in 2026. In 2022, that number was 582.
That looks like the whole story. It is not. The gap between that headline number and what really happened is the interesting part.
We looked at 3,037,501 apps on Google Play. This guide covers how fast AI apps showed up, where they landed, whether anyone actually downloads them, how they make money, and who is making them.
Every number below comes from those apps. We only counted “AI” when it stands on its own in the app name, so words like Air, Hair and Nail do not sneak in.
How many AI apps launch each year?
Start with the plain count, because that is the number everyone repeats.
In four years the number grew 28 times over. 2026 already beat the whole of 2025, with months still to go.
If you are thinking of building an AI app, that is the crowd you would be joining. But on its own, this number is a bit misleading.
Why that number is misleading
Here is what most articles leave out. Google Play was growing anyway.
Apps of every kind went from 203,635 in 2022 to 499,548 in 2026. That is 2.5 times more apps overall. So some of the AI growth is just more apps being made, full stop.
The fairer way to look at it is the share. Out of every hundred new apps, how many have AI in the name?
That share went from 0.29% to 3.26%. So the real growth is 11 times, not 28.
Or put simply, and this is the bit worth remembering:
In 2022, roughly 1 in every 350 new apps had AI in the name. In 2026, it is 1 in every 31.
That is still a huge jump. It is just a lot smaller than the number you usually see.
What kinds of apps are they?
Counting alone would say Productivity, Tools and Education have the most. But those are simply big categories to start with.
It helps more to ask how crowded each category has become on its own terms.
Productivity is the most crowded. More than one in every fourteen new Productivity apps now has AI in the name.
So if you launch a Productivity or Entertainment app called “AI something”, the name will not make you stand out. Everyone is already using it. Business at 2.2% and Tools at 3.3% are much quieter.
Do AI apps actually get downloaded?
This is the question nobody seems to answer, and it is the most useful part.
We looked at the middle app in each group. Line every app up by downloads and take the one in the middle: half do better, half do worse. That is more useful than an average, because a few giant apps like YouTube would pull an average up and tell you nothing about a normal launch.
Take those four numbers together.
The middle AI app gets 345 downloads. The middle app without AI gets 304. That is about forty downloads apart, which is almost nothing. Adding AI to the name no longer helps.
More than a third never reach 100 downloads. Not a hundred paying customers. A hundred people at all.
And the biggest one: 82.6% of AI apps do not even have a star rating. That is 30,029 apps out of 36,344. They are not rated badly. Too few people used them for a rating to appear at all.
One thing to be clear about. Calling your app “AI Something” does not cause it to fail. It just does not help, and it puts you in a very big crowd.
How do AI apps make money?
Almost none of them charge you to download. The money comes later, and they push for it harder than most apps do.
Nearly every app is free to download. AI apps are no different here.
The difference is what happens once you open it. More than half of AI apps ask you to pay inside the app. For apps in general, it is only about one in ten. So an AI app is roughly five times more likely to hit you with a paywall.
The usual pattern is simple: free download, a few free tries, then a subscription screen. If you are building one of these, remember your user has probably seen that screen three times this month already.
Is one company making all of these?
We assumed yes. The answer is no, and it surprised us.
The 36,344 AI apps come from 28,189 different developers. That is fewer than two apps each.
Only 3.9% come from developers with ten or more AI apps. The biggest single collection we found was 120 apps.
So this is not a few factories pumping out copies. It is tens of thousands of ordinary developers and small teams, each making one or two apps. You are not up against a machine. You are up against a lot of people just like you.
What this means if you are launching an app now
Four things to take from all this.
Putting AI in the name will not grow your app. Downloads are about the same either way. When 1 in 31 new apps says AI, the word describes you rather than sets you apart.
Think about how busy your category is. Productivity at 7.1% is much tougher than Business at 2.2%.
Expect users who are tired of paywalls. More than half the apps you sit next to have one.
Most apps never find users. A third get under 100 downloads and 82.6% never get a star rating. That is normal, and it is mostly decided before anyone sees your app page.
That is the real point. Your store page is the last step. What decides whether an app works is whether real people used it before launch. Our look at what happened to the size of Google Play covers the wider contraction this sits inside.
Frequently asked questions
How many AI apps are on Google Play?
We found 36,344 apps with AI in the name, out of 3,037,501 public listings we analysed. 16,284 of them came out in 2026.
How fast is the number of AI apps growing?
They went from 582 in 2022 to 16,284 in 2026. But because far more apps are made now in general, the fairer number is the share: 1 in every 350 new apps back then, 1 in every 31 today.
Which app category has the most AI apps?
Productivity is the most crowded, where 7.1% of new apps have AI in the name. Then Entertainment at 6.0% and Health and Fitness at 5.3%.
Do AI apps get more downloads than other apps?
No. The middle AI app gets 345 downloads, and the middle app without AI gets 304. More than a third never reach 100 downloads.
Are AI apps rated worse than other apps?
A little, where they have a rating at all. The bigger point is that 82.6% of them never get enough reviews to show a star rating.
Are most AI apps made by app farms?
No. They come from 28,189 different developers, and only 3.9% come from anyone with ten or more AI apps.
Does putting AI in my app name help it rank?
We cannot measure ranking, but we can say it does not bring more downloads. With 1 in 31 new apps using the word, it no longer makes you stand out.
